Lots of people have seen the "right" way as being polygamy.

I don't see any reason for polygamy to be illegal, unless or course fraud is involved, in which case it's the fraud that would be illegal.

Some, certainly.

But lots?

Do you know of any cultures where polygamy was the predominant form of family unit? Even in Chinese culture, with the first wife, second wife, etc. it was really a monogamous relationship with concubine adjuncts rather than true polygamy. It's just that there they were open about the mistresses they maintained, not secretive about it.
