Hey, Dan, Rat seems to have conspiracy theories similar to yours.VIA: Trust Us, We Know What We Do Posted 8/01/01 at 4:06 pm by Rat The closer is the day when VIA P4X266 is due, the more effort undertakes VIA to convince the mainboard manufacturers to buy its chipsets. However, since Intel doesn’t grant VIA the official license for the Pentium 4 chipset, VIA can’t succeed that easily. Even having set the prices for its P4X266 lower than for i845, VIA failed to win the hearts of many larger mainboard manufacturers , as they are really afraid of falling into Intel’s disgrace. As for smaller manufacturers, they should be much easier to convince, because what they really care about is gaining profit rather than maintaining warm and friendly relations with Intel. However, even those hunting for nothing but profit and staking the upcoming VIA P4X266 chipset may drop a brick. The problem may arise in case Intel manages to get its end and the new P4X266 based mainboards sales become illegal officially. It will mean that the companies, which have already ordered the new Pentium 4 solution will suffer significant losses. That is why VIA undertook a really desperate move in order to help the mainboard makers overcome their fear of Intel. According to Digitimes, VIA has guaranteed small and medium-sized mainboard makers that if any legal dispute arises, it will be responsible for all their related losses. Some of them, therefore, have decided to follow VIA’s timetable to mass-produce P4X266 mainboards. This is another evidence proving that VIA is very much sure: even if anything happens they will be able to find a way out easily. As for us, we can only expect that the new boards based on P4X266 will start selling together with the i845 based mainboards. xbitlabs.com wanna_bmw
