MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The
editorial pages of two major
newspapers in Rep. Gary Condit
(news - bio - voting record)'s district called on him
Sunday to resign, saying he had violated the public
trust by remaining silent about Chandra Levy's
disappearance.

In his first comment about the case in more than a
month, the Democratic lawmaker released a
statement lashing out at the papers, The Modesto
Bee and The Fresno Bee, and said he would make a
statement ``very soon.''
