Software getting it again. 08:01 ET Sun Microsystems (SUNW) 17.25: Merrill Lynch cuts its Sep qtr EPS estimate to a $0.01 from a prior street-high of $0.04 (consensus is $0.02); cites checks with US and primarily European sources. Also cautious on EMC (EMC 17.63), saying Sun/Hitachi deal will be the difference between a few qtrs of pricing pressure and fundamental erosion of EMC's competitive position. 08:00 ET ABN Enterprise Software Downgrades : ABN AMRO is downgrading VRTS and EPNY to HOLD from Add, and BEAS to ADD from Buy... says technology spending remains soft, with Europe weakening further and Asia beginning to show signs of decline.
