Combjelly, Re: "Any ideas why AMD's copper process is faster than it's Al one, then?"

My theory? It's a fact that Fab30 has more advanced equipment, and I think that AMD is taking advantage of it to increase the specs of their process there. I believe those small gate widths we were talking about earlier, around 90nm, are responsible for the much higher speeds out of Dresden. It isn't necessarily the copper interconnects.

The ability to tweak their process has always been an advantage of AMD, since they are smaller, and changes produce smaller risks. Intel usually has to "copy exactly" to get the stability they need for high volumes. This could eventually be a barrier for AMD if they want to get into 30+% market share. The more market share they have, the more volumes they will need, and the harder it will be to experiment with the settings on their equipment.
