re: They may not be aware of it once they have bought it, but believe me, if you are in a store and have two notebooks next to each other where one is called Compaq Presario 1200 and the other Compaq Presario 1600, the majority of customers will believe that the 1600 one is better.

Your assumption is that the model numbers are clearly visible, and that the consumer pays any attention. There is a model number he pays a lot more attention too, and that's the price.

Let me take a WAG at the average consumer decision process:

1st qualifier is price (has to be close to their range)
2nd qualifier is features, like a DVD or RW CD (if they want one of these they won't buy without it)
3rd qualifier is microprocessor brand (if there is a preference)
4rd qualifier is Mhz (comparitive shopping here, they will buy the most for the price)
5th qualifier is PC brand (could be higher if there is a preference; also could be more of a dis-qualifier if they have had bad experience or friend with bad experience)
6th qualifier is memory (easy to upgrade, can do at time of purchase)
280th qualifier is model number

That's off the top of my head, anyone feel free to take shots.
