While being a lawyer helps, reading the filewrapper does NOT require a juris doctorate. The file wrapper contains the Examiner's contentions and comments, as well as the applicants' responses in kind. It is this give and take - legal argument wrapping up the technical distinctions supportive of novelty and/or non-obviousness - that breath life into a patent claim. No juris doctorate is required.....most Examiners and jurors lack such a degree in the first place.
