That's not at all my experience.

The customers I've observed in various stores have almost all gone for one or two particular (major) brands. It's a huge factor, IMHO. The price differences just aren't what they used to be and this makes buying a major brand a viable option for many more people.

And this "burner" thing&#133 90% of the people I've observed in stores haven't asked about or expressed any interest for CDROM burners - or even DVD drives, which I personally find rather shocking. Every single one of the people I've seen go for a CDR drive have fit in the "male, 20-35" category.

This may be a "cultural" issue&#133 CDR drives just aren't really that main-stream in Europe yet (or in Denmark, at least). I've only known a single person who had a CDR drive and didn't fit the "computer nerd" stereotype (a German girl, btw).
