I think the statement was that intel is 600MHz ahead of amd. I guess that means that either intel or Paul released the chip already.

So you answer hyperbole with sarcasm and insults??? Not exactly an elevated discussion technique...

Provided the release dates for the 2.0GHz P4 (later this month) and the 1.5GHz K7 (sometime next month) are correct, Intel will indeed enjoy a 600MHz speed gap for a period of time in the market. That will be reduced to 500MHz with the introduction of the new AMD chip...

... all this is really beside the point. While the P4 was an under performer at low speeds (1.3-1.5GHz), it has scaled much better in terms of performance/MHz than the K7... so a chip which at 1.3-1.5GHz compared poorly on some benchmarks to the K7, has at 1.8GHz started to blow the doors off of the K7.

AMD is going to have a major marketing challenge ahead of them. When the P4 was at lower speeds, they could have probably made a PR stick... now, it'll be seen in the same light as the old Cyrix PR numbers... a desperate attempt at marketing an under performing chip as a technology leader.
