Since it is a matter of philosophical analysis, no scientist as such is competent to determine the precise beginning of human life. One there is fertilization, there is a distinctive organism which contains within it the genetic blueprint to develop into a full grown adult, and will do so if nature is allowed to take her course. I do not argue about "ensoulment" or when the organism becomes a "person", all of which is too speculative or religious. I merely observe that it is a human organism, and that we should not treat it as readily disposable.

Now, is the research potential a sufficient reason to destroy human embryos? First, we do not really know how promising the research is. Second, there may be other ways to obtain stem cells without using human embryos. On the question of the disposability of the embryos originating in fertility treatments, I think that fertility treatments are wrong on just those grounds, that they create disposable embryos, and therefore that we should not ratify an improper practice.

But suppose that embryonic stem cells were the only way to go, and the research was panning out. I would still say that the issue is too serious to proceed full speed ahead, without reluctance and an attempt to avoid use of embryos, even were it decided to allow their use in the end.

It is likely that marijuana should be legalized, but it is not an issue I am tracking. I am perfectly happy that women have the right to vote, and that there are sanctions against pollution........
