"in 1999, MSFT didn't go down very much from Aug to mid-oct"
You are correct. I've seen MSFT, DOW, NAS, go up during that time frame, probably about 1 out of 10 years. Sept is historically the worst month of the year with Oct coming in 2nd. I recall one year decades ago I was holding about 10 stocks, all about 25% winners going into Sept & I thought there was no way I could lose so I held them, by mid Oct they all were down 25%. I learned my lesson the hard way & now I make it a point to sell any position trade I have at the end of Aug. & buy back in sometime in mid Oct. Over years I saved so much money playing this way that I would not care if I missed a strong Sept some year and I could still catch any strong up move with a swing trade. Frog
