Actually I don't really mind the idea of having a place on a campus where women can get together privately and complain about men. Of course the argument can be made that men ought to have a reciprocal sanctum. I suspect that one of the major objections the women had was that while they would use their sanctum for painfully serious discussion and analysis of relationship issues, the men would doubtless use theirs to drink beer, watch sports on TV, and tell politically incorrect jokes. While this is no doubt fair enough, there is no doubt that the more extreme feminists (generally those in charge of campus womens centers fall into this category) found the idea repulsive.

Personally, the unfairness of having a womens center closed to men and no corresponding mens center closed to women did not bother me at all; if it kept the females happy I was happy to concede the point. If I wanted to get together with the boys I didn't need a mens center to do it. Of course it was unfair and discriminatory, but it made them feel better and it took no skin off my back, so I saw no reason to make an issue of it.

maybe a few because they would look on it as a good place to pick up chicks, little competition

I don't think many men in their right mind would go to a campus womens center to pick up chicks. You would have to be a serious masochist to even consider the idea.
