With the twin launch of XBox and Windows XP this Fall, one can expect an unusually high volume of PR from MSFT and its partners during this time--something to keep in mind.

Another factor which needs to be considered this year is that in recent years the annual October slump has coincided with end-of-year tax loss selling by mutual funds, many of which close their fiscal years on October 31st. With so many funds being underwater this year there is little need to "offset" their nonexistant gains with tax losses so I wouldn't be surprised to see this effect be significantly muted this time around. Conversely, individual tax-loss selling in December may be more pronounced than usual this year. If that's true then the after-Christmas rummage sale could offer unusually rich pickings this year.
