edit: Now that I think about it, we can eliminate the charity also. If he was going to give the money to charity, he would have given it in the form of stock rather than selling the stock and giving it in cash. Thus, we can conclude that unless Mr. Rock thinks Intel is going down significantly, he must now own a big-ass boat.

GV, it's a Charitable Remainder Trust. The money's already been given away.

"Sure, but if you keep it in your estate, you heirs get a stepped up basis. For Mr. Rock, that represents a rather significant number."

You have to look but you might end up saving a 20% tax on the stepped up basis and paying a 70% estate tax. Not good.
Also, the assets of a Char Rem Trust if not in the "estate" do not get the "stepped up basis".

re:...you heirs get a stepped up basis...

I think that depends on how its titled (JTROS or Common Property) and state of residence, and then only if the heir is your spouse. Doesn't work for non-spouses.

Your shorts are showing. It's none of the above.

If Mr. Rock is really thinking that Intel is going down significantly, he would not send out this huge signal by selling an insignificant number of shares to get some, what would amount to for him, chump change.
