Corning unit reduces work force by 900 (GLW) By Chris Kraeuter

Corning's (GLW) Cable Systems unit has cut 450 full- and part-time positions in the United States and Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Another 450 employees have accepted voluntary separation packages. These reductions, announced on Thursday evening, are in addition to recently announced company-wide cuts. "The decline in the telecom business has been unrelenting, and, unfortunately, we don't see a near-term recovery," said cable systems unit President and Chief Executive Sandy Lyons. Ahead of the announcement, shares ended down 38 cents, or 2.5 percent, at $14.92.
