Anyone who grew up in the South of the 50s and 60s knows these women well. They are an amazing blend of gentile, soft-spoken femininity, and terrifying, ruthless strength. They exist vividly in my memory while the men are like pastel ghosts, floating on the periphery of all the important life events like funerals and church socials. Actually these women appear frequently in my first two (unpublished and dusty) novels, but the idea of them as a group is wonderful- very Olivia Goldsmith (First Wive's Club). Or maybe Steel Magnolias already did it too well.
