All one needs to know about soccer is that a world cup qualifying game last year was decided by flipping a coin. The sissies must have been too tired to play.

does not include much intelligence, American football being a game where they have to stop play every few seconds so the coaches can tell the players what to do next. That's always bugged me about American football. I think it would be a much more interesting game if the players went out on the field and played the whole quarter without communication with the sidelines, the same guys playing offense and defense. That would require some real athletic versatility, and some brains as well.

The coach calls in the play, he doesn't tell players specifically what to do. In some cases a fair degree of intelligence is a great benefit esp. for QBs and offensive linemen. Not that most foot ball players are geniuses but there is probably at least as much intelligence required as in most other sports. If they played the whole quarter without communication from the sidelines then the plays would simply be fewer and usually less complex. It might require less intelligence except perhaps from the QB and whoever calls signals for the defense (most often the middle line backer I guess).

Some of the worst athletic batterings I've ever had were on football fields, especially late in the season, when it rains, the field gets all chewed up, and it freezes overnight. Try taking a good hard slide on that wearing no protective gear but a pair of shinguards.

I think the typical American football player gets battered more then the typical soccer player. Of course there are exceptions for example the kickers and punters usually don't get hit much, and if they do get hit there is often a penalty for the team that hit them.
