How much do we have wrong.

1. Only 13% of high school students think it is wrong to go to the movies on Sunday. Middletown High School survey

2. Juvenile share of crime declined from a high in 1957 of 55% (property crimes) to 33% in 1998. Media?

3. Juvenile share of violent crime declined from a high in 1978 of 23% to 17% in 1998. A media phenomenon?

4. Executions under civil authority are at levels equal to the beginning of the century when rape and other crimes were capital offenses. They are 1/4 the rate of the decade of 1930-1939. Are we more barbaric?

5. Affluent family income (top 5%) totaled 30% of the national income in 1929 and fell below 15% from the 50's through the 80's. The Loweest 40% was 13% of the national income in 1929 and 14% in 1998. Did the rich get richer?

6. Philanthropic donations from living donors have reached $130 billion per year dwarfing charitable bequests ($11 billion) corporations ($9 billion) and foundations ($13 billion). Are we really cheap uncaring vicious and mean?

7. Women's earnings as a percent of men's for the same job is 98% for ages 27-33 with no children. Unfair to women?

8. Suicides are slightly higher at 11.1 per 100K than at the beginning of the century at 10.2

9. Pupil teacher ratios are down from 34 in elementary to 19. Secondary ratios are down from 28 in 1910 to 15 in 1998. Are they accountable?

10. Labor union members as a percent of the civilian labor force declined from a high of 28% in 1950 to 12% in 1998.

AS, I don't despise rich people like do. Unless I know they are corrupt or have specific reason not to like them I admire them.
