Of course he ruled over more potential victims, but he also killed a greater percentage of the population then Arafat and Sharon have of Israel/Palestine. Neither of them has run a vast gulag system or done many of the other horrible things that Stalin did. This is hardly a defense of either of them. There are many horrible violent people who where not as bad as Stalin. Its more a statement about how bad Stalin was. Arafat needs Sharon to stay in power and vise versa. Only a person like Arafat justified the Israeli to "elect" a war criminal. I agree that if Arafat (or some other leader that supports violence) were not the leader of the Palestinians that Sharon would have less, maybe much less support. I'm not sure I understand Palestinian politics quite as well but Arafat was the leader even when relatively dovish Israelis where in power. Tim
