I think the fundamental problem is that the technology for VR isn't quite good enough yet.

The problem with VR is that humans have a hard time communicating and understanding what each other is really saying, so how can you write software to do the same thing? I know I surely says things that are taken the wrong way.

Beside this is a software problem and not a benefit of cheaper chips, which I think was your question. I don't think the processing speed is a limitation anymore.
