IMF, World Bank Scale Back Annual Meeting Over Security Concerns.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Security worries led the heads of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to give final approval to scaling back their annual meeting in the nation's capital.
The lending organizations' annual autumn meeting will be limited to the weekend of Sept. 29-30, officials said in a statement issued Tuesday. Originally, they had planned to meet a few days before that weekend until Oct. 3.

A spokesman for Washington Mayor Anthony Williams praised the decision.

"It's going to help us eliminate inconveniences to residents and commuters," Tony Bullock said. "It's going to reduce costs to taxpayers."

The IMF and World Bank said they "fully share the interest of the U.S. authorities" in ensuring the least possible disruption to the nation's capital.

Protests directed at the organizations had been planned for Sept. 28 through Oct. 4, and Washington police have been preparing a massive security operation. Police are expecting some 40,000 demonstrators.

District of Columbia officials have asked the federal government to underwrite the extra costs of providing security. Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrance Gainer said the city would seek roughly $38 million to pay for policing the two-day event.
