AJ: is AMD's 760MP marriage to Palomino a scam?

ROFL

Is the ThunderBird defective?

2xROFL!!!!

Sorry... I didn't mean to sound demeaning, it's just that... well, ok, I'll try to answer your questions...

From what I've read, much of the guesswork Palomino does, actually interferes with processing on Dual Mobo's, and greatly increases the Memory requirement Burden.

Then I suggest you go read some more ;-).

Suggested reading would include the article on Ace's Hardware on the 760MP:

aceshardware.com

To address your points concisely:

All AthlonMP chips are tested and verified to work in a dual-processor setting. "Regular" Athlons and Durons should work as well (and do work as well, by all accounts I've seen), but this is not guaranteed.

If you check out the article above, you will quickly see why AthlonMP is the recommended chip in a dual processor setting - the 1200MHz AthlonMP absolutely trounces the 1400MHz "regular" Athlon.

Is heat an issue? Not really, although it does (of course) depend on your setting. P4 Xeons - or even large-cache P3 Xeons - consume enormous amounts of power. In fact, the P4 Xeon 1.7GHz dissipates almost exactly the same amount of energy as the 1.4GHz "regular" Athlon. Clearly, having two of these in a small case in a hot server room may not be the best thing in the world ;-). (It should be noted that the P4 has lower temperature tolerances and is thus requires better cooling to keep it within specs). The AthlonMP certainly dissipates less heat and can be used in a 1U server.
