Am I entirely satisfied with education? No. But more people are literate, and spend more time getting schooling, than they did a hundred years ago.........

I think the standards for those who would consider themselves educated where higher then, but more people are educated now. Also one of the problems with the 8th grade test that TB was talking about is that it deals with knowledge that a typical educated person of 100 years ago might have. It would not be easy for a modern American to past that test but it would probably be hard for a person from that time to pass a modern test that would be given to the same % of the population that had to take that 8th grade test. This would probably still be true even if you stripped off questions about modern history or new discoveries since that time.

Before graduation in the spring of 1921, the eighth graders were given an examination. Sunde doesn't remember how many were in his class, but only he among the boys and some of the girls took the test. The other boys and girls chose not to. Only those who took the exam and passed could graduate...

Here is an example of such a test
skyways.lib.ks.us

Some examples of terms that are less familar or relevant to people today that are in the test.

2. A wagon box is 2 ft. deep, 10 feet long, and 3 ft. wide. How many bushels of wheat will it hold?
3. If a load of wheat weights 3942 lbs., what is it worth at 50 cts. Per bu., deducting 1050 lbs for tare?

How many people deal with bushels of anything to day or use the term "tare" in their daily lives?

9. What is the cost of a square farm at $15 per acre, the distance around which is 640 rods?

Without looking it it up can you tell me how long a rod is?

10. Write a Bank Check, a Promissory Note, and a Receipt.

When was the last time you wrote or even saw a promissory note?

1. Give the epochs into which U.S. History is divided.

Different people would have different opinions and even if there was a standard opinion today it would be different then what it was in the 19th century.

The other history questions are something that an educated person today might be able to answer but they are more likely to focus on things considered more important at that time. Since then there have been many new discoveries in other areas and also new discoveries about ancient history, not to mention new modern history to learn. You have to pick where you are going to focus, you can't learn everything.

ORTHOGRAPHY
(Time, one hour)

This is an area that has less emphasis now. It could be argued that it should get some more but the fact that people in the 1800s knew more about some specific areas where they where heavily drilled does not mean that they overall had a higher level of education then we do.

GEOGRAPHY
(Time, one hour)

This is one area where I think many people are more ignorant then educated people of the past. However it still is true that more people are educated now. Many people were illiterate then and I don't think they where geography experts.

Simply documenting something does not validate the argument. I know many university professors seem to think that way, but they are in grievous error!
