As indeed we were (or had been 2-500 years earlier, anyhow). But it doesn't alter the fact that their previous nationality was British, rather than Irish; indeed there was no Irish nation as such until years later... Allegiance surely would have been Irish; but not 'citizenship'.

Incidentally, my understanding of the potato famine is that it was not caused by the British, nor spread, nor intentionally exacerbated... but feel free to point me to research proving otherwise, or showing what could have been done (bearing in mind the realities of who ruled, their mindset, and their interests - the rich have rarely gone through voluntary deprivation to aid others...).
