I hear your points. Lumber companies in the wrong hands are even worse. But the days of the old sawmills are numbered no matter what. We can't pollute the rivers and streams anymore. Can't clear-cut or even semi clear-cut virgin forests. Their value is greater if they are left alone, for many reasons. True we need some trees to harvest but perhaps your second and third growth forests should be the only ones harvested (tree farms in essence) not the only portions of natural forest we have left. Leave them for future generations. Tree re-plantings can never take their place. I for one am willing to avoid buying wood products for the rest of my life. We simply don't need it anymore except for special purposes. Already of course it's so expensive it's prohibitive for most. And maybe that's a good thing. Problem is the high prices also tempt the loggers into cheating or plundering more. There ought to be tougher laws protecting forests, not weaker ones as Bush-Cheney are enacting. Expect this to be a sad 4 years for America's forests. Irreplaceable.
