It's all relative. The higher Mhz dictates the pricing. Intel may not be doing great either but they are in the better position going forward, at this time....
They have 4 speed grades over the Athlon (1.5,1.7, 1.8 and soon 2.0)...more if they wanted to mark the chips at 1.6Ghz and 1.9Ghz.

Look at a chart of Mhz differential and AMD and Intels stock price. AMD made all it's stock gains last year when they had the Mhz lead.
AMD needs a speed grade boost...better yet a hammer...

What does Jerry do? Unload more stock.

I think that the only purpose served by this crazy situation of 2G P4 underperforming a 1.4G Athlon has been to leave the consumer in a state of disgust, to the point that she has decided not to buy anything at all.

I think the consumer likes to have an orderly hierarchy to choose from. Can't blame the consumer either - if she is out to get the very best the market has to offer, she really wants her sister and uncle to recognize that she got top-of-the-line. She doesn't want any ambiguity around that. Today, the situation is that if she went and asked 4 sales people for the best PC, 2 would say a P4 and the other 2 would point to the Athlon.

What makes this worse is that there is competition within a brand - how is she to know she is getting a top-of-the-line HP? Or Compaq?

I think what AMD should try and do is convince the major OEMs (well, those that remain, anyway), to create a separate line for AMD products. People are comfortable thinking about a top-of-the line Mercedes vs a top-of-the-line Lexus. Having an HP Pavillion offering with both P4 and Athlon options is bound to confound the consumer.

This would be a clever way for AMD to create its own brand, and the major OEMs would benefit immensely as well.
