The main thing about professional American sports is that they have operated on the principle of specialization to a high degree. People rarely change positions, there are both offensive and defensive teams in several sports, there are sometimes specialty squads, and the coaches are expected to handle not only training but strategy and tactics. The purpose is not to develop well- rounded athletes, but to have as high a standard of play as can be achieved, to keep the spectators happy......

At worst it was inaccurate not duplicitous and IMO not really even that.

The plays are drawn up in advance and the coaches try to prepare the players as much as possible but my point was that there is not a stop in play for the coach to tell the players specifically what to do between every play. It was in response to SR's comment - "That must encompass a definition of manliness that does not include much intelligence, American football being a game where they have to stop play every few seconds so the coaches can tell the players what to do next."
