I think they (AMD) are going to lose substantial market share. Ordinarily, you would think that a company in this position would have trouble staying in business. However, having said that, I think AMD has three things going for them. 1. Jerry Sanders. If any one is to blame for AMD being in this precarious position - it is Jerry Sanders. At the same time, Jerry Sanders has a 30 year track record of staying in business. He has seen harder times. He is a survivor. If the past is any guide, Jerry is going to survive this and make another come back. You can almost count on it. 2. Cult following. You can't deny this. AMD has a rather large cult following. The cult following invest their time and emotions trying to will AMD survival. On balance, they probably do more harm in the traditional market place then they help. But, they do keep AMD alive in a loser's world. 3. Dirk Myers. This guy has a track record. He is a big fish in a little pond. Intel probably has 10 or 20 people equivalent, if not more talented than Dirk Myers. But, that is the problem. It take nine months to make a baby - you can't have nine women make a baby in one month. Jerry Sanders understand Dirk Myers' value. He has virtally anointed Myers AMD's technical visionary. Intel does not have this kind of (design) vision. It's my old a camel is a horse designed by a committee thing. Finally, it's the old Dracula movie thing. If you don't put a silicon stake into AMD's corporate center, AMD is likely to come back again and again. Mary
