As an engineer I believe that using any OS from mr. gates in a mission critical application is stupid to criminally negligent. One can add a private level of security to msft but that secret set of code may fix problems X Y Z and yet have some new problem YY. Also it does nothing to fix all the worms and viri that seem to be never ending in the press. Linux is used by lots of smart folks who have access to the source code and can look inside and see what's going on. Any problems are fixed instantly and the fix is published immediately. No-one has a vested commercial interest in keeping any hole a secret.

As to unixes, my personal opinion is sun is OK but the one of the least user friendly unixes. But it's order of magnitude safer to use for security over any mr. gates OS.
