Well, since there are more entrants to the World Cup every tournament, more money spent by (and on) teams each year, and more televised games in more countries than ever before - I'd question the fading... why, even the US has now staged a world cup, and is competing keenly to get to the next one.

Golf has been around for years, BTW, and not just in the US; the US is (arguably) the best in the world at present, but it's not a matter of a US sport becoming popular elsewhere. It's Scottish (or claimed by the Chinese <g>), popularised by them and then the rest of the Brits as the Empire spread. Sorry.

US football was heavily promoted in the UK back in the 80's, various teams set up, and there was promotion across Europe in the 90's... I'm not sure if the leagues set up are still running. They don't make even the minor satellite channels here.

Ice hockey is around, as a niche interest (except Scandanavia and Russia(etc.), where it's got a far longer heritage). The UK has a league of 8 teams - one is based nearby. A high attendance for a cup final is 10-15000; the new arena for the London Knights has a maximum capacity of 10,000. Not very major.
Or did you mean grass hockey? That's got a longer history, more players and a wider following... <g>

Baseball? US, Japan, Cuba... is it played elsewhere, professionally? (Honestly, I don't know). It gets near-zero publicity here and across Europe, I don't know anyone who's ever seen a game or expressed interest, which is not true of the others.

Basketball? Well, it was a popular fad in the early 80's. I daresay it's still played at the odd school.

So, regardless of your attempts at provocation, who needs to feel defensive?
