Here's where this started:
Whatever the dynastic politics, there were about half a million persons of German, Dutch, and Irish, and other descent at the time of the first census, out of a population of about 2.5 million.
Now you Brits may not have recognized the Irish, but apparently the US gov't did. And, using your argument, there were no East Indians until 1948- -they clearly were British.
And the Honk Kong Chinese wer not Chinese until 1997 - they were British.
You Brits may have considered the Irish British (really you didn't and you know it), but they took exception to that. Extreme exception, with bullets and bombs when they could.

Today's standards of decency and responsibility can't really be applied.
Very good. That gets us yanks off the hook for slavery (started by you Brits, ended by Americans in 1865) and the American Indians.
