Just based on what I have read and what I think.

1 - One of the recent reviews mentioned that SanDisk is supposed to come out with new, faster cards any day now. So it appears this has been on the drawing board for a while.

2 - I feel pretty confident that at least 80%-90% of digital camera consumers out there could care less about write speed. Do consumers ever think about 'write' speed when it comes to your standard 3.5" floppy disk? No? Well I submit that's how much they've thought about write speeds.

3 - As for cost/performance ratio, two observations: a) being neither the lowest cost producer nor the highest performer doesn't mean you can't have the most attractive ratio, and b) I have no idea whether SanDisk is lowest cost or not - I don't know which company has the best margins, though if you have some numbers we'd all appreciate them :)

JH, I share your frustration.

To summarize your points, SanDisk needs to innovate and lead. SanDisk needs to create a stronger brand identity.

They are not known to be the fastest or the cheapest.
They don't advertise to be either. They do try to
advertise as reliable and rugged. Many competitors
still use SanDisk as a measuring stick when it comes
to performance as a sum of cost, availabilty, breadth
of form factors, reliability, reptutation...

I think Lexar wins hands down in commercial promotion
of their CompactFlash cards. We have argued that
point here many times in the past. But the commercial
promotion comes at a cost and Lexar is yet to show
a profitable quarter. SanDisk is in it for the long run.

I don't think the average consumer would find a
SanDisk product unappealing, uncompetitive or
unsatisfactory for their needs.

There is still a lot of room for improvement.
