Jim,

You forgot, "AMD is no damn good, because they are not Intel."

Regarding Dell's report today, I wouldn't bet any money that they will say anything negative about the outlook. They will be in lock-step with Intel's propaganda regarding the P4 ramp. If it does not sell through, Dell will just give a warning later in the quarter and claim that the seasonal uptick just didn't materialize.

HP is another story. Even though Fiorina is on par with Dell for positively biased FUD, she is seen as a liar, while Dell is some sort of a saint. I think the last bits of Fiorina's credibility are on the line, and that their report will be rather sobering. Tomorrow, CNBC will be asking their guest analysts why Dell and Intel's guidance seems so contradictory to everyone else (with the exception of Nvida) in the industry.

Tomorrow could provide a great opportunity to buy Intel puts. Having said that, the exact opposite will probably happen.

Pravin.

Jim, nice rant, but in chip development, as in many other things, there is more than one way to skin a cat. Intel has the R&D organization in place, and the $$ to spend on it to test, and then pick the best possible options for their purposes. Copper at 0.18, in retrospect, was not necessary at Intel to keep clock speed going; witness the P4. AMD, OTOH, either is apparently not organized for, or doesn't have the money to do the R&D on process technologies, so they do a "buy" in the make or buy decision. Uh, Messrs IBM and Motorola, what do you have this year?
