I completely understand the point you are making, although I am sure many non-christians do not.

The Bible is very clear about is personal responsibility and sloth.

Personal responsibility always entails obedience to God's will in our life. True obedience always benefits the believer and others spiritually and often materially. James is very clear about works in the believers life since obedience will always produce works. Similarly, sloth is always condemned since it represents direct disobedience to the will of God in our lives.

Those who would legislate away the giver and receiver's responsibilities with government funded programs, have cheated them both.

After all, how many people are grateful to the government and how many people enjoy paying taxes? Social welfare is always more successful for everyone when it is personal.
