CEO Sinegal's comments: Responding to questions from the anchorperson, he noted that COST continues to enlarge existing stores because they realize improved economies of scale -- in other words, a slight increase in profits per square foot. I think he mentioned that international expansion is going as planned - in other words, it is going well. (Either he mentioned it or an analyst mentioned it shortly before he appeared.) He was going to mention something specific about growth rates which he said are generally at or above target but got interrupted by a question about competition from Sam's Club and similar, quasi-membership box stores. His response was that COST has competing with these others for years and still is growing and hitting its expected rates of return & growth.

It was a fairly brief interview, considering the amount of noise recently on how the consumers' continued purchasing is how we are going to keep the economy moving up (or at least sideways). The COST facts that did get mentioned were positive.

Harry J.
