Windows is more and more becoming an OS that lacks features. SMB is a Microsoft proprietary standard, but is supported by many other operating systems. So why shouldn't Windows support a proprietary standard from other vendors? Microsoft is in a situation where it doesn't need to provide as many features as possible, but can dictate its customers which features they need.
