standard response to deflation.

Several books I've read about the global response to the 1930s deflationary period call attention to what they term "competitive devaluations" as a tug of war develops between nations desparately trying to hang onto their trade competitiveness in a shrinking market.

Not a pretty sight other than the few exceptions like gold and other items where shortages developed in essential commodities and/or services for very specific reasons.
