"Expensive" in the US depends on where you are. Big cities, like LA, are much more expensive than small towns, the West Coast is more expensive than the rest of the US, except around New York city. Gas stations close to interstate highways charge maybe 50 cents a gallon more than you'll pay five miles away.

And the exchange rate makes a huge difference. When we went to Canada a couple of years ago, the prices reminded me of the 1960's.
