Sorry for the wrong assumption. I'm glad it wasn't your own son and wife, but still hard.

I know about close families. I live right next door to my mother in law, and as she is aging we're building a house now that she will have her on space in so we can take care of her. My sister in law and her family live about 3/4 miles down the road, my brother in law and his family are rebuilding their house about a mile down the road and are retiring into it. The family gathers frequently -- in fact, the women have a "sit and knit" every afternoon they're home, which means every day in the summer (they're all teachers) and every Sat and Sun the rest of the year. My own sister and her family moved from the East coast out to Washington so we could be closer together. We don't see her as often, but regularly. So I know plenty about close families!
