Mary, Re Professional Workstations

No matter how outrageous (IMO) Dan has been in stating "facts", I have never said he does not have a right to state his opinions as you think I do not have a right to state my opinions on this thread.

Don't be so sensitive! I did not say that you do not have a right to state your opinions. In fact, I loved your informed opinions recently on the size of server CPU markets. I just said that you should start another thread on professional workstation characteristics.

What I did say was that your comment on Dan's post on the AMD Athlon 1.2GHz performance being superior to P4 at 1.7GHz is unfair. That kind of data is very interesting.

Your first reponse to Dan's post seemed like a lot of name-calling re AMD and cash-challenged techno geeks and conjecture re professional workstations users while this post in reponse to mine has the kind of categorical, thoughtful analysis which is a lot more interesting.

What I wanted to stress here was that Dan's article addresses issues that are interesting to a very specific, and very small, segment of the market that you obviously believe yourself to be part of - and that is perfectly okay.

Where ever did you get that impression about my beliefs? If that is the point you were trying to stress in your original response you were doing a very poor job. I understand that you are irritated with Dan (as am I most of the time), but that is no excuse for all the name calling on your part.

Re: professionals buy workstations from OEM's rather than high-end PC's from local resellers

All categories are purchased by a mix of buyers, but in this case you probably have the ratio reversed.

High end workstations are bought by better informed buyers than are most machines. Those buyers are also more inclined to accept exotic hardware like Unix workstations or VAR built custom machines.

A lot of infrastructure has popped up to support Athlon MP (special cases in particular) with widespread stocking and availability. This doesn't happen in the absence of demand. Workstation buyers are more likely, not less likely, than typical corporate buyers to procure an exotic machine from a VAR.
