I suspect legal considerations are the key factor because Intel has agreed to support Rambus and now regrets its agreement.

Intel is thrilled to have VIA produce a chipset for DDR/P4, and most likely encouraged them to do so. but must refuse to license it, and make threats of litigation, to reduce the likelihood of litigation from Rambus.

Something to think about.
