Some people think that the opposite of being "long" a stock, is to go "short" the stock. I don't think so. I think being "long" and being out of the stock are the real opposites. In either case, short-term price movements don't bother you. (Well, if you are out, a rising stock-price might bother you but it doesn't cost you anything, as long as you don't do anything).

The opposite of being "short" is going "long" on margin. Because in either case, any short-term move that goes against you results in disaster.

I never have gone "long" on margin, and I have never shorted a stock either. However, I have been in and out of stocks. Right now, I am largely out of this market (about 1/4 in stocks and the remaining in money-market).
