"but is it what actually occurs?"

I am not aware of the problem you are implying. However, individual Muslims or groups are just as likely to breach the doctrine of their community as anyone else.

"Hmmm.... OK. Why is the same prescription (covered from head to foot, including most of the face) not applied to men so that they are "protected" against women not in their family and gay men?"

The face thing (veil) is fine for individual women or even entire nations where it is chosen and accepted. It is not that universal as you can see by the mix of people wearing Scarves (few wear veils). Most (but not all) people see a womans hair as offering a type of sexual attraction to males.

Many Muslims (men and women) adopt conservative western clothing and not all even wear the scarves. The "prescription" for women is to have your form covered so that your sexuality is not attracting attention from males who have no right to enjoy it (not married to you). Of course we men can and do fantacize whether we see forms or not. It is our responsibility to discipline our minds and turn our gaze away from sexual attractions. I am not aware of a problem with sexual harassment from gay men toward Muslim men. Muslim men are more conservative about locker room type of behavior than the mainstream so there might be less opertunities for confusing encounters between men.

Men are also expected to dress modestly and to cover their sexuality. Most people (but not all) do not think women are as easily distracted by a man's physical form. Simple test: If an average woman with a decent build offered herself as a sex toy to a community of men, what would the results be? I'm guessing she would get pretty ravaged, and she would experience an extreme drop in social status. If an average man with a decent build offered the same oppertunity to a community of women, the attention he would might simple be some rolled eyes, I doubt that he would be too ravaged or that his social status would be greatly affected.

Men approach sexuality differently than women...duh.

I am not a religious scholar and my life is pretty much on the fringe of what you could call religious. The above is my opinion as I would not even consider myself a spokesperson for Islam.
