Just as some of the gains where exaggerated now some of the losses are. For example JDSU's write-off of goodwill. JDSU didn't lose some ungodly amount like $50bil (or whatever the exact figure is) in actual dollars in one quarter. If it did it would be bankrupt. It wrote off all the goodwill from its purchases. The goodwill was theoretical value that wasn't really there. JDSU paid high prices for companies with its inflated currency (it's stock).

If it had bought the same companies for the same number of shares now the effect on the company and on its shareholders would be similar but their would not have been this huge write-off.
