One thing you mentioned I did not understand - 7200rpm. What does that refer to?

That's the speed at which the hard disk turns -- rpm equal revolutions (complete rotations) per minute. The higher the rpm, in general, the faster you can get data onto and off of the disk. Though there are other factors involved, too. But generally faster is better.

Pretty awesome to start calculating how many turns your hard disk makes in its lifetime -- at 7,200 per minute, that's 432,000 per hour. Calculate how many hours a day your computer is on, how many days a year, how many years you expect your hard disk to last something over five years, I'm sure) and you get a pretty awesome number for a mechanical device to work flawlessly.

David ...

No, the modem remarks would remain the same, regardless of the speed ...
for
you must have A modem for dialup, the point at which you are to start.....
I've NOT dealt with DSL yet, so I really know nothing about the design of a modem there ..
but, the cable hookup (which I have, along with dialups) uses a DIFFERENT modem ... one can NOT use the same one for both ....
and so, as I see it ...
the regular OEM modem is fine and spending extra money is fruitless.

NOW ... this would change "slightly" were you to demand more of the machine than it sounds to me as if you will ...
so,
rather than muddy the water with lots of picking and choosing ... the std modem is more than adequate for most all home and small office use......

7200 rpm ...

Hard Drives turn at different speeds ...
seems as if I have a couple laying around that are in the 3000rpm *(revolutions per minute) range, some a wee bit greater, but all the ones I use on my primary boxes now are 7200rpm.
The regular run of the mill installed hd is at 5200rpm ... now, it is NOT a horrible thing to have one ... it is just that AT THE TIME of new construction (ordering a new one, building a new one) the price difference in , say a 20G 5200rpm and a 20G 7200rpm Hard Drive ... the price is only about 20bucks higher for the faster ones ....

Scuzzi HDs are most likely beyond your needs, both in cost and benefit ... and I've seen 15000 and 10000 speeds on both of those ...
but
on a normal buy from a normal builder .... national, regional, or local .... the EIDE 20 to 40 G Hard Drive should serve your purpose well, and at a fair cost.

Should you have any more questions, feel free to ask ... not only just me, but ANY of the great folks who stay on the CL thread ....
