Dan,

Me: the area they make the most money in is servers, where Intel is sole source?

You: The issues that have been making sales so difficult for AMD (PIII's much lower power consumption) are now even with P4 power consumption being similar to Athlon.

Here's what's keeping AMD out of the server and workstation market, from the Ace's Hardware article piece below: infrasructure support from multiple reputable companies, and the S word, stability. Not too many current customers of Intel based servers are going to be interested in the AMD units if they don't know if they're going to work or not every day.

It is a shame that no first-tier OEMs have put their weight behind the dual Athlon platform. Especially in the case of the CAD and Content Creation markets, which would seriously benefit from a platform which is up to 30% faster and is very competitive in terms of price. Of course, the Tyan Thunder K7 is not the easiest board to build a system around and the board has experienced some teething problems. However, our demo system has survived weeks of intensive benchmarks, and while it is only one system, it adds a lot of weight to the argument that it indeed is possible to build a stable dual-processor Athlon workstation.
