<<If Daschle would shut up, it would help.>>

No doubt it would help Puff, who, like Bob Dole, was a very effective minority leader, but who failed miserably as a majority leader.

In the absence of the emergence of any potential candidate of the first order, the Dems may very well choose the "Bob Dole Option" in 2004. The results would most-likely be the same for them in 2004 as they were for the Republicans in 1996.

If you listened to Daschle's speech last week you'd know he is the voice of truth and reason. So refreshing to hear. His description of Missile Defence was particularly enlightening. All money for that system comes out of badly needed programs for one thing. And, the "successful" test recently involved a target missile fitted with a homing beacon. The missile launched to intercept it was told exactly where it would be at what time. Small surprise it hit it. But will we ever have an enemy who tells us exactly where their missiles will be so our 100 billion dollar system can shoot them down? Not likely. Also Daschle unlike Bush tells us the truth that any real threat now is not from slow visible ABM's but some stealth attacks, terrorist mini-bombs and other delivery systems this Star Wars would be useless against. That's why it only makes sense as a hugely expensive offensive weapon to dominate the planet. So is Bush trying to prepare for war against China? That's the only potential foe I can think of. Certainly Russia's rotting rusting missile system isn't going to be used against us except by accident. And N. Korea and Cuba are starving nations. That leaves Libya where Bush's close friends Chevron own half the country.
