The past is much more complicated than that editorial(imo). Really educated free thinking (for their time) men saw slavery as antithetical to the principles this country was founded on- after all it wouldn't take a super bright bulb to realize the irony between the words that "all men are created equal" and the literal fact of slavery. But most people are dim bulbs. They don't question, they do 't examine. After all look how long it took for slavery to go away. People just didn't think about it. Just as they didn't think about the rights of women. It isn't innocence, so much as evidence that most people lead unexamined lives. As everyone should have known for 2000+ years. If they'd read their Greek classics.
