Yes, he did, and I agree. If I said anything that seemed to contradict that, then I wasn't making myself clear. Perhaps it was my comment about the individual.

If you take an individual infant from each of those groups and adopt them into families in Iowa, they will all grow up conspicuously Iowan. And if you take an individual from each of those groups and remove a leg due to accident, the one-legged people will find that, as adults, they have much more in common than a singular leg.

We are each a unique combination of all the inputs in our lives, of which race/ethnicity is only one. Many people, either by choice or by default, put heavy emphasis on their group identity, and many groups foster group identity, but, for the individual, there's nothing inevitable about it.

I think that healthy adults honor their ethnicity but don't dwell on it.
