I'm in Canada, but I have a sister working and living in California for gone 10 years now (we're both self employed). We've done lots of comparisons / contrasts on income, personal safety, health care, housing ... the whole nine yards. So I'm planning to stay put :o) Mind you that is LA. I was born and raised basically in Montreal, Québec with a brief stay in the northern hinterlands of Manitoba. For me Vermont, eastern New York State, New Hampshire, Maine etc always seemed pretty close to home. I guess it's that North South affinity between Canada and the US, which is pretty strong. The roots were basically the same.I can tell you firsthand, that changing residencies can be very expensive. No argument at all. I've seen it first hand in my sister's case. It is a significant issue. You should also be aware that Canada's income tax rates are MUCH higher than those in the US. . Of course I know that first hand ;o) However, they do have socialized medicine. LOL... we're still trying to get that one right. I've experience with health care both through my wife's career, and as a software developer I spent a good deal of my career on hospital software and dealing with its bureaucracy. The waste and little 'kingdom building' is unbelievable. I believe he 'best' system is somewhere between the American and Canadian, but in the case of health care I'd take ours (Canadian) simply as the lesser of two evils. (It is a complex issue.) One terrible issue is the idea of universality in Canada, but that's another can of worms. Nice chatting with you Paul. regards Kastel Just checked your profile before submitting, Ottawa Eh! So of course you already have a Canadian perspective. Are you a transplant ? We have an annual tradition (I'm in Toronto now) of going to Ottawa for Winterlude and we stay in Hull (Love the slides at Parc Jacques Cartier) at the Holiday Inn. Remember the big fire they had ? We were one floor down and across the hall from the 'burning room'... Talk about fight or flight reflex kicking in...:o)
